Leticia is the entrance point to the Amazonas. From here you can reach by boats not only the Colombian Amazonia but also Brasilian and Peruvian ones. It is a chaotic centred little town. You can find banks, supermarkets, pharmacies, shops, restaurants and travel agencies. It is possible to get all your supplies before going to deeper Amazonia. The little port of Leticia serves public and private transportation. You can purchase your public boat tickets to reach remote villages from the offices placed just in front of the port in a passage. Travel agents and currency exchange offices are found in the main street, perpendicular to the port.
HOW TO MOVE
Leticia is a small town. You can walk everywhere if you do not mind the hot weather or rain.
You can easily find a tuc-tuc which is safe and cheap. Remember to negotiate the price with the drivers as they tend to ask for a price 100 times higher!
If you have a big suitcase, take a taxi instead of a tuctuc to transfer you from the airport/port to your hotel.
USEFul SAFETY TIPS
As Leticia is a city placed on the border with Brasilia and Peru, there are many money exchange offices. However, the exchange rate is very inconvenient. Withdrawing money from a bank or an ATM is a better option.
The police are very helpful in Leticia since it is a tourist city. You can get an advantage and ask them to stop a tuc-tuc for you and to get the price so you do not have to negotiate with the driver.
WHERE TO STAY
The centre of Leticia is very chaotic and noisy. There are many guesthouses and accommodation options. Hotel Madreselva is a cute accommodation option if you do not want to stay in the chaotic centre. Just 10-15 min walking distance from the city centre, rooms are surrounded by a tropical garden.
WHAT TO DO
You shouldn't miss the parrot spectacular in Santander Park. Santander Park is a little free city park. Every day before sunset thousands of parrots come there to find a place on the trees for the night. Just go there and wait until you truly get astonished by the number of parrots.
You can join excursions to the Amazonia from the travel agents or ask if your hotel organizes any.
You can take a tuctuc to go to Tabatingo, Brazil and you do not need a passport. There is not much to do in Tabatinga either, however, you may want to shop for Brasilian items.
where to eat
There are many restaurants in town, but these two are the most favourites: 1- Bar Restaurante Tierras Amazónicas Address: Barrio Centro Calle 8 #7-50, Leticia, Amazonas, Colombia 2- Restaurante Cevicheria Nativo Address: Cl. 9 # 8-45, Leticia, Amazonas, Colombia
